Portraits: Siblings

Mar 14th, 2011 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

(NEW WEBSITE: www.katiefolkphotography.co.uk)

Heeey :D . Sorry for the awfully long pause…had stuff to do and kept forgetting to keep up with this…yeah.

Anyhoo.  I’m almost finishing my last project before our final major…This one was on Portraiture.

The brief stated that we had to take a series of portraits containing the use of Location and Studio. Mine are sortof a mix of the two. I have been shooting on location but using my conservatory and collapsible background as a “Studio”.

I chose to do a study on Siblings. Their similarities, differences and use of body languages. When you look at two siblings standing next to each other, do they really look any different compared to if it was two friends standing next to each other? Do the genes really show through?

This is my collection nearly complete:

Kelsei and Jade try 1

Amie and Debbie

Rachel and Farrah

Naomi and Rachel try 1

Rachel and Naomi try 2

Jack and Amy

Kelsei and Jade try 2

(There was another group of Siblings I shot for this project too but due to request I was not allowed to post this online because of under 10s)

Enjoy,

Year 2 Begins!

Sep 12th, 2010 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Well, Summer is almost over and as of  Wednesday the 15th September, I am back into year 2 of my photography foundation degree! Boy, have we got a lot of projects coming up! First, we’re starting with “Narrative”.

The aim of this project is to create a series of photographs around the subject of “Narrative”. It can be based on anything we want, whether it be inspired by a real situation or could even be from a story made up in your mind. After some thought, I decided I want to base my narrative around the famous play “An Inspector Calls” by J.B Priestley. I have studied this play before through my school life (English and Theatre Studies) and want to turn it into a project.

I am hoping to experiment with some Still Life this time with controlled lighting as I haven’t really done much on this. I think it’ll be great to collect some interesting objects to match the time period of “An Inspector Calls” and turn each of my images into almost  pictures of the evidence behind each character in the play. I would like to create a “Whodunnit” feel throughout my images to make the viewer question who the objects link to and pick up clues throughout the murder mystery of Eva Smith :) .

Since this project will be quite lengthy, I will probably also use some models too so the images don’t get too repetitive!
Well, updates coming soon!

Oh, and P.S. I NOW HAVE A NIKON D90~!!! :D . I got it as a birthday present.

Documentary Project: Photo Essay

May 2nd, 2010 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Brief: To create a 10-image photo essay on the subject of your choice. Try to pick something you can go back to for another shoot.  The photographs should carry a strong narrative through them.

This project caused the most distress to me! It took AGES to get someone who said said yes and then didn’t back out :P . Anyway, I got an awesome choice in the end. With it being around election time and I being a Liberal Democrat supporter, I decided to get in touch with the local Lib Dems for Grantham and Stamford!  They said yes, I could go out with them, and I got to hang out with Harrish Bisnauthsing the representative for our area :) ! It was great fun because they were out and about in my town the other night. I get to head up to their office next week!

Anyway, here are my final 9! (I can’t show my 10th one ‘cuz it was photographs of documents on the wall)

Advertising Project:

May 2nd, 2010 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The aim of this project is to take 3 photographs, one being on 5×4 film and the rest digital (And digital Medium Format) of 3 similar or the same product in different ways. The objective of the whole project is to make the lighting to perfection and really bring the product out using it. I went through so many different product ideas for this!

Long story short, I finally did my final shots on different flavoured Cider: Apple, Raspberry and Pear.
Because I was doing drinks, I wanted my products to look extra refreshing. I decided to have the drink poured into a glass and a jug covered with lots of ice, then drop the according piece of fruit into the jug and capture the splash when it hit the liquid :) .

These are 2 of my final shots.  The other shot was on 5×4 film and didn’t come out as well as I expected. It was on Colour transparency film and the exposure has to be just right or the picture will look awful. Unfortunately, mine was burnt out :( . It metered fine on digital, but, film is completely different…nevermind, I’ll remember to stop it down next time!

Hope you like them :) .

Dreams and Memories improvements: Sleep Paralysis

Feb 7th, 2010 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

After receiving feedback on my photographs, I knew how I needed to improve them.

For my Sleep Paralysis photographs, my tutor liked the composition, however some changes needed to be made:

- Showing of faces/facial expressions

- A variety of different angles

- Costume

I did some youtube research on Sleep Paralysis also to get an idea of how other people pictured it, and to find some information into how people react and feel when they experience Sleep Paralysis.

I asked my models to return for me and I decided to shoot some point of view angles.  I tried to get quite cropped in pictures to show both facial expressions and make the viewers of the photographs curious to know what is happening out side of the frame.

In conclusion, I am much more pleased with them than I was with my first outcomes. I just need to show them to my tutor and hopefully pick a final photograph for my coursework!

Dreams and Memories Shoots:

Jan 31st, 2010 Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Hey :) !

Ok, so, I’ve done some shoots for my Dreams and Memories Photos. Here they are!

I feel that my “Chase Dream” images came out quite well. However, we can only submit one and I dunno which one to pick :s! Haha.

My “Falling Dream” image didn’t turn out quite as I expected. I tried taking this image of two models and couldn’t seem to get the angle or shutter speed right. Perhaps it was to do with the lighting I was using. It was quite dark due to the mood I was trying to create, so I was trying to get a fast shutter. I wanted the subject to have her eyes wide open to the shock of falling and almost trying to reach out for safety. I wanted the hair to have movement in it, but I wanted the shot to be sharp almost like a freeze frame. I thought the image I have uploaded was the most successful out of all of my photos around this dream.

My” Sleep Paralysis” photograph was also harder to create than I thought. I think the image I have uploaded for this was quite successful, as did my tutor. But, the angles need to be changed a little and the lighting moved round a bit more to get the shadows on the subjects right. I might also get the “predator” model to grip onto the clothes of the victim more to show the effects of Sleep Paralysis. A similar idea for the victim – perhaps grasping onto the bed sheets to show she is trying to get away. It would also be better if the viewer could see both their faces rather than just one. I am hoping to do another shoot for this image in the near future :) .

My “Rebellion of Confession” photograph was also not as I imagined it. However, I think it works to an extent. I would like the viewer to be more drawn to the candle somehow, so I might look into ways of perhaps photo-shopping it to make it stand out better. I wanted to get the message across that the female in the photograph was trying to steer away from the “light” as in the right way of life. She wanted to break free from the “right way of living” and create her own path.

Well, that’s all for now :) I hope you like them!

Portrait Project

Jan 19th, 2010 Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

Brief:  To create a series of 4-8(?) portraits on 4×5, transparency film and medium format with your own theme.

Because we need to make up some more hours work wise, (need to show the examiner we’ve spent so much time working or something), our tutor proposed we do a portrait project, while getting used to film cameras at the same time. I think this is going to be quite tough as I’ve only had a few goes at 4×5, but, it’ll be a challenge, and the polaroids I’ve seen it make are fantastic quality!

Although, not confirmed with my tutor, I’ve decided I’d like to do Seasons through hair colour. This would mean:

Spring: Blonde

Summer: Brown

Autumn: Red

Winter: Black

I have 4 models now, however, I’m not sure how many people we need to photograph yet.

I’ve chosen models who have long hair with a prominent colour. I think this looks more elegant, and the models will have a similar look, just  different accessories to show their season. The shots I am going to take will just be head and shoulders, because I want the viewers to focus on the hair and the accessories the models will be wearing.

For me, Spring is going to be a light hearted girl. Pretty and innocent with an optimistic attitude on life. I have chosen blonde hair to represent the innocence and angelic feel to the season. My model is going to be wearing accessories such as a white or flowery type hair band (perhaps even a daisy chain?) and two white or pink ribbons tied around her wrists. A white t-shirt may be used to just to keep the theme rather than being a completely different colour.  She will be posed smiling and cupping her face with her hands.

Summer is a quirky girl with attitude. Wanting to get out there into the sun and throw her cares away, whilst looking for a summer romance. I’ve picked summer to have brown hair because it shows attitude. It makes the face stand out well, and I think brown hair would match quite well with hard makeup such as bright red lips.  For my models accessories, she will wear sunglasses on her head, perhaps a red/white polkadot neckscarf (for that country girl feeling) , and a typical summery strappy top. Perhaps a bright colour of red or yellow. For my model’s pose, I would probably have her standing with her arms crossed, looking into the camera with a quirky smile and eyebrows raised.

Autumn is a more laid back season. Usually with people returning to their normal daily lifestyles such as school, college, uni and work. I want the girl of Autumn to have a content attitude, happy and easy going. Her accessories would be all fairly dark. Such as a deep purple or red. This would include a woolly hat, a scarf and gloves.  I would probably ask her to wear a jumper or coat to keep with the theme. For her pose,  I would ask my model to stand with her hands in her pockets or cupped together at her waist, looking straight into the camera with a small smile. Showing the smile in the eyes would be very important to this picture.

Winter is a girl of excitement and passion. She likes to be in season and dress accordingly to it. My model will be wearing tinsel in her hair, with a white woolly hat and matching scarf and gloves. I would like her pose to be her hands either side of her face,  looking upwards into the light as though she’s in awe of the season.

=) I will update when we hear more about what we have to do!
